Graphic Communications Careers Attract Young Artists and Scientists

NEW YORK, NY - 6/6/2002 -- New York City high school teachers and guidance counselors need to understand the many career opportunities for students in the city's huge graphic communications industry. At a special industry forum on June 6 at the Boro of Manhattan Community College, a stellar panel of experts, educators and employers described the wide range of graphic arts jobs for students at all levels and discussed the evolution of high tech curricula out of traditional vocational education programs.

"Graphic communications runs the gamut from design and creative work to high volume production to very complex digital imaging and computer science," said panelist Jack Powers, director of the International Informatics Institute and a past chairman of the Board of Education's Graphic Arts Education Advisory Commission. "If a kid is into drawing and art, or math and programming, or people skills and management -- or all these different skills at different times -- the graphic communications business is a wide open career path that rewards talent and hard work." Powers said that the many changes in the business from the early days of hot metal printing to today's digitized and Internet-intensive environment have spawned many opportunities for young people with the right graphic communications skills.

This forum, organized with the support of the Graphic Communication Arts Advisory Commission, is the first of several designed to help communicate the career opportunities in the printing and graphic communications industry in the tri-state region, the types of skills required for successful careers in this industry, and the pathways to such careers.
